How To Make Gumballs

Skip the store and make your own gumballs at home.


  1. ⅓ cup gum pellets
  2. ¾ cup confectioners sugar + 2 tablespoons for sprinkling
  3. ½ tablespoons light corn syrup
  4. ¼ teaspoon citric acid
  5. Food coloring and flavoring of your choice


  1. Pour the confectioner’s sugar onto the wax paper and make a well in the center using a popsicle stick.
  2. Put the gum pellets, corn syrup, and citric acid in a microwavable bowl and pop in the microwave for 45 seconds.
  3. Stir the mixture and heat again for 10 seconds. Repeat until the pellets have completely melted. (NOTE: Don’t let the kids do this on their own as the mixture will be extremely hot.)
  4. Pour the mixture onto the center of the confectioner’s sugar and stir using a popsicle stick.
  5. When the mixture is cool enough, start mixing using your hands until well combined.
  6. Add the flavoring and coloring.
  7. Knead the gum until it becomes smooth and easy to roll.
  8. Roll the gum into a thin snake.
  9. Cut into bite-size pieces.
  10. Roll each piece into a ball and dust with confectioners sugar.
  11. Wrap in a square of wax paper.


Color and Flavor Variations

  1. Blue for raspberry or blueberry
  2. Light blue or light pink for gummy or tutti frutti flavors
  3. Pink for strawberry
  4. Yellow for banana or lemon
  5. Green for peppermint, green apple, or kiwi
  6. Orange for cinnamon or buttered rum or maple syrup
  7. Red for cherry
  8. Purple for grape
